About this Collection
We had 27 6th - 12th graders make Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the Casa Maria Soup Kitchen in Tucson. Then we have an overnight sleep out. On Saturday, at 4:00pm, the kids come with a backpack with their sleeping bags, clothing, and toiletries. The teens are homeless for a night. We are fortunate enough to live in an area with a mild climate, so sleep out side our church. If the temperature drops below 40 or rains we move inside. After each Mass, they collect money, food, clothing and toiletries for our St. Vincent Society, and Stand Up For Kids. During the overnight event the kids carry all of their belongings, as we walk around the church property, sharing scenarios one might encounter on the streets. They also watch a poverty/homeless themed movie have a community soup for dinner and oatmeal and cream of wheat for breakfast. There are a few students eager to start planning next years event.
