The Hampton Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated, believes in spending the day "on" for the MLK holiday. Because service is an integral value for JnJ, the chapter members have been collecting food for the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank for seven consecutive years. Each year, the children encourage local shoppers to consider adding to their grocery baskets for those in need, or making a cash donation. This year (2019), the children encouraged participation on behalf of those impacted by the government shutdown, which impacted the Hampton Roads area significantly due to the local concentration of large numbers of military and government agency employees. This event and the meaning behind it is a strong reminder for our children about the value of community service at all levels.
