The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) Northwest Washington Synod, home of the Seattle Seahawks and their famous 12th Man, and the ELCA Rocky Mountain Synod, home of the Denver Broncos, celebrated by extending a mutual challenge to raise money for the hungry. Bishops of both synods challenged ELCA congregations and fans to see which synod could raise the most to support the hungry via the 2014 Souper Bowl of Caring.
The 12th Man cares about those who are "food insecure." Long before there was a Seahawks 12th Man, Christ and his 12 disciples also cared about the hungry. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America continues to fight hunger locally, nationally and globally by caring for those who do not have enough to eat. Not only were local ELCA congregations encourage to collect food and donations, but also both bishops put donation "buttons" on their synod homepage websites where fans could "vote" for their favorite team by making a donation on-line.
Congregations are encouraged to consider:Giving to ELCA world hunger by voting on-line,
Giving 12 cans of food per member,
Donating $12 per person to local food banks or ELCA World Hunger,
Advocating 12 times at state and local levels to address hunger in the U.S. or the world, or
Take one action to reduce hunger in each of the 12 months of 2014.
The Seahawks 12th Man cares! Go Seahawks!!
