As people turn their attention to the Big Game this Super Bowl LIII Sunday, thousands of others will be collecting millions of food and cash donations for local hunger-relief charities through Souper Bowl of Caring. At this time, nearly $5 million has been collected towards the $10 million national goal. 100% of all collections are donated directly to each group's charity of choice. This year, food banks have seen an increased need to replenish funds, restock shelves and assist with distribution after the busy holiday season and extreme cold weather impacting the Midwest and Eastern parts of the country.
Since its inception, $143 million has been generated for soup kitchens, food banks and other hunger-relief charities across the country. Support for this youth-inspired movement has grown to include past Presidents, NFL teams, youth groups, church groups, grocery stores, local businesses and passionate individuals. Alison Reese, Executive Director of Souper Bowl of Caring stated, "Our history has shown that one can, one dollar or even one hour of volunteering can quickly add up and make a tremendous and lasting impact in our local communities."
Inspirational stories and images across the nation are already coming in on how groups are choosing to participate. Schools have set up collection bins for the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Rams asking students to predict who will win by placing their donations in their favorite team's bin. Participating grocery stores have set up donation barrels or pre-packaged bags and are accepting cash donations at the register. Church youth groups will be passing around soup pots to collect monetary donations or encourage parishioners to bring food items during this Sunday's service. Many participants will host their own Souper Bowl of Caring watch parties and encourage donations as they watch the big game.
