How did you hear of Souper Bowl of Caring? Our pastor was told about it in the mid-1990s by a parishioner who had read about it in Ann Landers column. He contacted the organization and started taking donations that year in the two churches he pastored. Then, when reassigned to his current location, he brought the idea to this church and it took off.
Why did you choose to join the Souper Bowl of Caring team?It is a good program to join in giving to the needy and a wonderful way to fellowship on Super Bowl Sunday.
What does your group do to participate in the Souper Bowl of Caring movement? We have a soup luncheon after the worship service on Super Bowl Sunday. The soup, salads and desserts are all donated, and the collection that is taken at the luncheon is giving to the local food pantry.
What have you found is most successful for raising cash and food items? We use a large soup pot to collect the funds and fun decorations in the theme of football and the specific teams involved each year.
Tell us a little about where you donate your collection to.Our local food pantry is used by many and supported by the entire community. Our church facilitates the collection and distribution.
What does participating in Souper Bowl of Caring mean to your group? It is a way to show God's love and caring with those in our church and in our community. A week after the event our pantry leader stood up in church and told us that God had blessed us. She went on and said we had been low in food and the offering of love at the Souper Bowl dinner made it possible to purchase food in abundance for the pantry.
What does it mean to you?It feels good to join with Christians throughout the world in helping to alleviate hunger, and that it is exciting to see the way the program has grown year by year. When we see how much has been collected over the past 25 years, and each year individually, that may not otherwise have been channeled for this purpose, we can see the hand of God at work through many hands. Also, when looking at how this all began, we are reminded that one person, or one small Youth Group, can make a difference for God's kingdom.
